Introduction to Belly dance

Beginners/refresher class
November 25th 10:00-12:00

This taster shows you the fundamental moves that underpin the various styles of belly dance. You'll get introduced to two middle Eastern rhythms. One part theory and two parts dancing with a sprinkling of combos to add a little kick. As well as beginners, this class is suitable for intermediate dancers who want to return to the basics and learn some history about this art form. Coin belts available to borrow.

Elegance and emotion

For any level of dancer
November 18th 10:00-12:00

One of the most common compliments I get about my dancing relates to elegance. We will consider how the following creates elegance:

  • posture and strength in the upper body

  • flowing smoothly from one position to another

  • moving with intention and 'filling' every note

  • an awareness of flattering angles of the arms and body

We will do movements to open up and activate muscles involved in posture, tracking, arm and hand movements. You will learn elegant movements to convey emotion. I will teach a simple routine to draw the material together.

Zilltastic Zone

Experience of basic belly dancing is required
Dates TBC

Zills (finger cymbals) can really liven up a performance. It is sooooo satisfying to be able to dance and zill at the same time! The clip opposite is the first choreographed dance with zills (by Zoe Jakes) that I learnt in 2022. Let me teach you how to hold and play zills. We will play some common phrases. You will have time to consider how you might incorporate zills into your next performance.

Belly dance for the Dance Floor

Suitable for beginners and beyond
Dates TBC

Need some new shapes to throw on the dance floor? Let's take our inspiration from Belly dance and add some style over that stale 'step - touch'. This workshop incorporates music across the decades from the 80's onwards. Stun your besties on your next night out - even better, sign up to this class as a group then step out together.

FAQs

What are workshops versus weekly classes?

Workshops are one-off focussed sessions of 2 hours in duration. Classes develop skills over a series of shorter lessons.

In a workshop you are able to sample my teaching without long term commitment. An advantage of tutorial style workshops is small number (four students maximum) which allows be to give regular individual feedback during the lesson. Instead of just watching and listening, you will feel seen and heard.

Where are workshops held?

At my home studio in Larbert, Scotland.

What do I wear to a workshop?

Wear something that doesn't restrict your movements. I like to wear leggings or pantaloons and a vest/crop top or t-shirt. I don't like to wear baggy tops as they can hide the lines and shapes of the body. You are welcome to wear a belly dance belt if you feel comfortable, I have a limited number available to borrow or buy. You can choose to dance bear-foot or wear soft dance shoes such as ballet shoes. I wear soft greek sandals as they offer some protection for my heels.

Why are there no weekly lessons in Larbert offered?

I will be able to commit to weekly lessons in 2024 - look out for details soon.

Who can attend classes?

Classes are open to ages 16-90+, all shapes and sizes, all genders and sexualities are welcome.
